Remote sensing of CO2 leakage from geologic sequestration projects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Monitoring for leak hazards is an important consideration in the deployment of carbon dioxide geologic sequestration. Failure to detect and correct leaks may invalidate any potential emissions benefits intended by such projects. Presented is a review of remote sensing methods primed to serve a central role in any monitoring program due to their minimally invasive nature and potential for large area coverage in a limited timeframe or in real-time as a continuous monitoring program. Methods investigated were divided into those capable of indirect detection of carbon dioxide leakage, such as monitoring for vegetative stress and ground surface deformation, and those that directly detect gaseous and atmospheric compounds, by means of such tools as Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared or Tunable Diode Lasers. Both direct and indirect methods present viable means of detecting a leak event, though ultimately, a robust approach will incorporate multiple monitoring tools that may include both direct and indirect remote sensing methods. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Hyperspectral Remote Sensing for Geologic Carbon Sequestration Field Monitoring
In order to constrain the growth of atmospheric CO2, Geologic Carbon Sequestration (GCS) has been proposed as one “clean coal” technology for mitigating the more extreme impacts of global warming. An important issue to ensure the successful storage of carbon dioxide in geologic sequestration sites is the ability to monitor these sites for possible leakage. More understanding of CO2 storage proc...
متن کاملMonitoring Geologic Carbon Sequestration with Radar Remote Sensing
Geologic Carbon Sequestration becomes an essential instrument which has been aimed for mitigation of global warming. More understanding of storage processes and assessing environmental, safety, and health impacts in the event of a leak to the atmosphere are certainly important. Therefore, monitoring is one of the answers enabling technologies for CO2 storage. It is expected to support multiple ...
متن کاملAn improved strategy to detect CO2 leakage for verification of geologic carbon sequestration
[1] The long-term storage of CO2 must be verified to ensure the success of geologic carbon sequestration projects. To detect subtle CO2 leakage signals, we present a strategy that integrates near-surface measurements of CO2 fluxes or concentrations with an algorithm that enhances temporallyand spatially-correlated leakage signals while suppressing random background noise. We assess the performa...

Carbon dioxide is one of the major greenhouse gases generated by human activities which, by virtue of its impact on global climate through “Greenhouse Warming”, are implicated in extreme environmental impacts such as more prevalent and more intense storms, bushfires, floods, droughts and heat waves. In order to constrain the growth of atmospheric CO2, Geologic Carbon Sequestration (GCS) has bee...
متن کاملRetention of Co2 in Geologic Sequestration Formations: Desirable Levels, Economic Considerations, and the Implications for Sequestration R&d
There is a growing body of literature that points to the significant potential of carbon capture and sequestration technologies to help society address the challenge posed by climate change. In particular, carbon capture and sequestration appears to be a fundamental key to controlling the costs of addressing climate change. Within this literature, there is also speculation that the retention of...
